The mustang is a breed of roaming horses found primarily in western North America.
The first ancestors of the breed were domesticated horses imported to the Americas by the Spanish and Portuguese conquistadores. The English word mustang is derived from the Spanish mesteño (mixed breed). This also meant "animal without a possessor" and became the general term for free-ranging horses.
